Ragnarok Online: Which Version, Which Server, and What VIP and Cards Really Cost

Four Ragnaroks are live at once, and picking the wrong one costs you months. Start on a mid-rate private server or Zero Global; official Renewal rewards players who already know the game.

The essentials

For anyone landing on Ragnarok Online for the first time, or coming back after a decade away. It tells you which version to join, what a private server's rate actually buys, what VIP's 150% covers, and why cards take thousands of kills — before you commit a character to the wrong server.

Ragnarok Online has been running since 2002 and never consolidated into one game. Versions, private servers, VIP and card rates are four separate decisions, and you make all of them before your first job change. Get the order wrong and you start over on another server, because nothing transfers.

Here is the short answer. The official service is free, runs Renewal up to fourth jobs, and sells a VIP package that lifts EXP and drops to 150%. Ragnarok Zero: Global opened in August 2026 as a paid subscription with no free tier. Private servers hold most of the active population and set their own rates, from x1 purism to instant max level. Cards — the items that define a build — still drop at 0.01%. Being free on the official server puts it in the same bracket as the rest of the free PC catalogue, with one difference: here the grind is the product.

Four Ragnaroks are running, and they are not the same game

Four Ragnaroks run at once, and only one of them is both free and current.

Four versions of Ragnarok Online run at the same time, and they are not interchangeable. Pick wrong and you rebuild your character from zero somewhere else.

Pre-renewal against renewal is the split that matters

  • Pre-renewal (Classic) — base 99, job 50, old damage formulas, no third or fourth classes.
  • Renewal — fourth jobs from base 200, rewritten damage maths, an EXP penalty tied to your level gap.
  • Zero — the Renewal engine with classic pacing, opening at an early episode with second jobs only.
  • Private servers — any of the above, at rates the owner sets.

Ragnarok Zero: Global opened on 18 August 2026 across Southeast Asia, Europe and Oceania. It is the first global Zero server on PC, and it is subscription-only.

A fifth Ragnarok is already in testing. Gravity cleared Chinese approval in October 2025 and ran a wiped PC test on 27 August 2026. Where Ragnarok Online 3 actually stands — dates, platforms, and whether it is worth waiting for.

Private servers hold most of the players, and the rate is the decision

The rate you pick is your calendar, not your difficulty setting.
The rate you pick is your calendar, not your difficulty setting.

Most active Ragnarok players are not on the official server. They are on private ones, and the advertised rate decides how your next six months feel.

The four bands you will see advertised

  • x1 to x10 — low rate, pre-renewal purism, months to reach 99.
  • x10 to x100 — mid rate, the most populated band, and where I would send you.
  • x100 to x255 — high rate, endgame within days.
  • x1000 and up — instant max level, built for War of Emperium and PvP.

I levelled the same Acolyte twice this spring. Second job took an evening on a mid-rate, and three weeks of identical fights on a 1x. The rate is not a difficulty slider, it is your calendar.

Reputation outranks rates. NovaRO and TalonRO come up repeatedly for stable populations and no-pay-to-win rules, and any private server can close without notice.

Paid progression is why most people go server-shopping. If that is your reason, games like Ragnarok Online with no paid EXP compares the ones built without it.

VIP multiplies what you earn; it does not unlock anything

VIP multiplies what you already earn; nothing behind it is locked.
VIP multiplies what you already earn; nothing behind it is locked.

VIP is a multiplier, not a gate. You can level, change job and clear content on the official server without spending anything.

What the package adds:

  • 150% EXP and 150% drops
  • Death penalty cut to 1%
  • 600 storage slots and up to nine characters per server
  • Cheaper Kafra warps, better quest rewards, and areas that otherwise need a token

Prices move by bundle and by region. Steam's plan has listed at $20 for 30 days of VIP plus 2,000 Kafra Points, while a bare 30-day VIP has been quoted nearer $7. Check the live listing before you buy.

Fifty percent extra EXP sounds decisive, and it is not. What you farm matters more than what you multiply.

Monetisation is the honest question behind all of this. How free PC games actually make money lays out the models, VIP subscriptions included.

Cards decide your build, and they drop at 0.01%

One MVP card, ten thousand kills: the maths that shapes every serious build.
One MVP card, ten thousand kills: the maths that shapes every serious build.

Card drops are the real endgame, and the base rate is 0.01%. That is roughly 10,000 eligible kills for one MVP card at x1, before party splits and server tweaks.

Why the number is worse than it looks

A quirk in the drop roll adds a second 0.01%, so 0.02% is the working figure. Card events have historically doubled it again. You are counting in thousands of kills, not hundreds.

Private servers publish their own card rates, and they are usually kinder: mid-rate realms commonly advertise around 0.20% on normal cards and 0.10% on MVP cards. Read the rates page before you invest a character.

I have played this game on and off for years and dropped exactly one MVP card. Card hunting rewards classes that farm alone, because a party splits the odds four ways. The solo farming classes, ranked puts numbers on which ones actually do it.

Twenty gigabytes, an old laptop — but not a Steam Deck

Twenty gigabytes, any old laptop, and one anti-cheat that stops the Deck cold.
Twenty gigabytes, any old laptop, and one anti-cheat that stops the Deck cold.

Roughly 20 GB and a ten-year-old laptop will do. Ragnarok Online is a 2002 client with two decades of patches on top; the renderer is not what will stop you.

One thing does stop people. GameGuard, the anti-cheat, does not run under Linux, so the Steam Deck crashes out and no supported workaround exists. If the Deck is your only machine, choose another game.

Storage is the other honest constraint. The full requirements and what an old laptop really holds has the exact figures, and light free PC games by size and settings is your shortlist if 20 GB is more than you can spare.
