You want to play Minecraft free multiplayer on PC with two or three friends, tonight, without anyone paying. The browser Classic at classic.minecraft.net comes second on convenience alone — zero install, but nothing saves and the invite link has failed for me more often than it worked. The Java demo and the Bedrock trial come last, not because they are bad but because they block online servers by design; the Java demo goes further and allows only one demo account per server, which kills the whole point. What you give up on ClassiCube is real: Classic-era blocks, creative only, no mobs. If survival with friends is the actual goal, a free voxel game serves you better than any free slice of Minecraft.

The trials lose on one line: online servers are blocked. Java demo play is capped at 5 in-game days on a fixed seed and only allows LAN — with a single demo account per server, so two of you cannot both play free.

Take the browser Classic if your session is under an hour
- Nobody wants to make an account, including you.
- You are on a locked-down school or work machine where nothing gets installed.
- Building together for twenty minutes is the whole plan, and losing the world afterwards costs you nothing.
One warning from three evenings of trying it: the invite link is documented for up to nine friends, but twice out of three my friend landed alone in their own empty world. Mojang's own bug tracker carries reports of Classic multiplayer failing. Treat it as a coin flip, not a plan.
Take a free voxel game instead if you want survival

- You want mods and a server you fully control, for free.
Three reserves that could send you back to the paid game
No survival on any free Minecraft route. Classic-era servers are creative building — no hunger, no monsters, no crafting tree. If that is what you came for, the free games built on the same idea are the honest exit.
Community servers go quiet outside US evenings. Pick one from the list that already shows five or more players before you invite anyone. Otherwise run the free MCGalaxy server software yourself and hand your friends the address.
Eaglercraft looks like the shortcut and is not one. It is an unofficial browser port of Java 1.5.2 and 1.8.8, hit by Mojang DMCA takedowns in 2023 and still legally exposed. Do not build a weekly group around something that can vanish overnight.
On your machine
Both free routes are light — ClassiCube runs on hardware that would choke on modern Java, and the browser route depends far more on your browser and allocated RAM than on your graphics card.
