Games Similar to Cuphead: What Carries Over, and Which One to Start With

Nothing copies Cuphead whole. Every game like it keeps one piece — the boss rush, the run and gun, or the hand-drawn art — and you pick by the piece you actually miss.

The essentials

For anyone who finished Cuphead and wants the next one. Name the piece you miss — the fights, the shooting or the animation — and this page sends you straight to the article that covers it, instead of handing you a list of twenty games that share nothing but a mood.

Cuphead passed five million copies by 2019, and its 2022 expansion cleared a million on its own. That audience now goes looking for games similar to Cuphead and hits the same wall: the thing they loved was never one thing.

Three pieces sit inside that game. A boss rush, a run and gun, and 1930s rubber-hose animation on every frame. Almost nothing else carries all three at once. I replayed the base game from a clean save this summer, and what I missed afterwards was the fights — not the shooting, and not the levels between them. Name your piece first, and the rest of this page routes you.

No game similar to Cuphead keeps all three pieces

Each candidate keeps one piece and drops the others. That is why generic "if you liked Cuphead" lists feel wrong — they mix a boss rush with a platformer and call it a match.

Ask yourself, in this order:

  • The fights. You replayed King Dice for the pattern, not the level. That is Furi — bosses only, nothing in between.
  • The shooting. You liked the stages as much as the bosses. That is Blazing Chrome or Contra: Operation Galuga.
  • The drawing. The animation is why you stayed. Nothing matches it yet; the closest is Mouse: P.I. For Hire, a rubber-hose shooter released in 2026.

Difficulty is a setting, not a family trait

Punishment separates these games less than you think. Furi drops to a Promenade difficulty and later added an Invincible Mode. Operation Galuga scales. Celeste ships Assist Mode.

None of them are free-to-play. Every game here is a single purchase with no currency, no banner, no season pass. If a free model is what you were after instead, how free PC games actually make their money covers that side.

Cuphead 2 is confirmed, undated, and worth waiting for

Nobody else animates frame by frame at this budget

Studio MDHR announced two games on 5 June 2026 at Summer Game Fest. One is a new hand-animated Cuphead, shown in a stop-motion teaser with no title and no window. The other is Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit platformer built on Sega Master System-era tooling.

Early stages means years, not months. The first game took seven. If you are waiting on the sequel rather than shopping for a substitute, that changes what you should be doing now.

The rest of the hand-drawn board — who else is animating frame by frame, and what has a date — sits in the Cuphead 2 and hand-drawn run and gun board. Go there if you follow the studio, not the genre.

The games like Cuphead that stop punishing you

Difficulty is the most common reason people bounce off Cuphead, and it is the easiest thing to fix. Three games take the shape and soften the hit differently.

  • Celeste keeps the death counter but hands you Assist Mode, tunable per-run.
  • Blazing Chrome keeps the run and gun and shortens the stages — a failed run costs minutes, not an evening.
  • Furi keeps the boss rush intact and lets you step down a difficulty instead.

Softer does not mean easier to recommend. I bounced hardest off Furi's later duels, and the fix that worked for me was dropping the difficulty rather than switching games.

Which of the three actually lands best is a judgement call, and it belongs to the ranked less-punishing list. It picks a winner; this page does not.

Still the only thing that keeps all three pieces. Around 1.5 GB on top of the base game, on every platform Cuphead already runs on.

Two on one couch cuts the list in half

The second player changes how you die, not how hard it is
The second player changes how you die, not how hard it is

Local co-op is the fastest filter there is. Cuphead itself is two-player on one screen, and most of its lookalikes are not.

  • Out: Furi, Celeste, Hollow Knight. All strictly solo.
  • In: Blazing Chrome, two players local.
  • Best in class: Contra: Operation Galuga — two in story mode, four in arcade.

Shared-screen run and gun punishes differently. Playing Galuga next to a friend, our deaths came from crowding the same lane, not from boss patterns — a failure mode Cuphead's solo bosses never produce.

The full ranking, including which ones survive a second player without falling apart, is in the couch co-op list for two. If you want free options for the same evening, the best free PC co-op games for two is the cheaper route.

Where games like Cuphead run, and what they weigh

A real d-pad fixes more deaths than any setting
A real d-pad fixes more deaths than any setting

These are 2D games — weight is a non-issue. Cuphead with its expansion lands around 5 GB. Blazing Chrome is roughly 200 MB. Any laptop from the last decade clears both.

Platform coverage is broad. Cuphead is on PC, Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and Mac. Operation Galuga and Blazing Chrome cover the same ground. Mouse: P.I. For Hire is the outlier, targeting current-gen only.

The controller matters more than the machine. I play most of my Cuphead handheld, and the pink parry flash is the one thing that genuinely reads worse on a small screen — a d-pad fixes more of my deaths than any settings change ever did.

Exact sizes, handheld behaviour and per-platform notes belong to Switch, Steam Deck and small PC. Check it before you buy on the wrong platform.
